Supplies

To make these adorable coffee filter bats you will need:

  • White coffee filters (you could use brown, but the colors won’t be as bright)
  • Washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Clothespins painted black
  • Black paper
  • Glue
  • And for our eco friendly googley eye alternative, you’ll also need red paper and a hole punch

Instructions

Step 1:

Paint the clothespins black in advance, and let them dry.

Step 2:

Fold the Coffee Filter in half. And use the markers to color in one side of the folded filter. Try to cover as much of the white as you can.

We recommend putting the coffee filter on a try or a reusable plastic sheet. This will help protect your tables from markers, and hold the water we will be using in a moment.

Step 3

Using the eye dropper, drip water slowly onto the colored coffee filter. This will cause the colors to run into each other and create a tie-dye like effect.

Step 4:

Let the filters dry. (Tip, put them in the sunshine to dry faster. Otherwise you may have to wait overnight.)

Step 5:

Once the filters are dry, fold them in half again (they will be folded into quarters now). And cut half circles along the rounded edge. This makes the classic shape of the bats wings.

Step 6:

Re-open the coffee filter. And carefully scrunch the center of the wings together. Then take the clothespin and pinch it into the narrow spot you just made.

Step 7:

Cut out a shape that is roughly round, with two triangles on top. This is the bats head.

To make the eyes, use a hole punch to make little red circles. (Punch holes in the red paper, then open the hole punch to get the little red circles out.)

Optional: Add black dots to the center of the red circles for pupils. You can also use white paper for eyes if your prefer your bats to be less creepy.

Step 8:

Glue it all together. Glue the eyes to the bats head, and the head to the clothespin.

Let that dry and your bat is all done!
